Gambling Ads on IPR-Infringing Websites Continue to Decline

The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) is pleased with the findings of a recent study that reveals a notable decline in gambling ads on websites that violate intellectual property rights (IPR).

A research project conducted by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) examined the quantity and types of online ads on websites and apps that infringe IPR within the EU, including unauthorized streaming platforms for sports, films, or television programs. The EUIPO study discovered that in 2021, advertisements from major gambling companies (including EGBA members) on IPR-infringing websites in the EU decreased by 55%, following a 20% reduction in 2020.

The study suggests that the trend of decreasing gambling advertisements on IPR-infringing websites continued in 2021, falling from 18% in the first quarter to 8% in the final quarter. Advertisements from all gambling companies saw a slight decrease on IPR-infringing websites, falling from 28% in the first quarter to 25% in the final quarter. Gambling advertisements also accounted for less than 1% of ad impressions on mobile applications.

EGBA Secretary General Maarten Haijer stated: “I am happy to observe continued and significant year-over-year progress by leading European gambling companies (including our members) in reducing their advertising on websites and applications that infringe intellectual property rights.”

Were moving forward, but there’s still work to be done. We encourage European gambling businesses and their advertising partners to take action and ensure their advertisements are accountable. We’re eager to continue collaborating with the European Commission and other stakeholders to combat online ads that infringe on intellectual property.

Our initial sustainability report, published last July, revealed that more customers are utilizing safer gambling tools.
