Alibaba Deal Aims to Bring Match Poker to Millions in China
The Chinese e-commerce behemoth, Alibaba, is joining forces with Oceans Sport and Entertainment to introduce the excitement of competitive poker to the Chinese market. Their objective is to navigate around stringent gaming regulations by promoting a distinctive variation of the game called “Match Poker.”
Although specifics of the collaboration remain undisclosed, both organizations have ambitious goals, aspiring to entice an astounding 2 million Chinese participants to this non-gambling iteration of poker over the next half-decade.
This is particularly significant considering mainland China’s unwavering stance against wagering in all its manifestations, with the exception of government-operated lotteries and limited allowances in Hong Kong and Macau. “Match Poker” sets itself apart from conventional poker variants such as Texas Hold’em and Omaha by eliminating many of the components associated with betting.
Created by the International Federation of Poker (IFP), Match Poker prioritizes ability and tactics over chance. It’s a team-oriented format where competitors vie for points rather than currency, and cards are distributed digitally via a mobile application instead of in person.
The IFP is eager to emphasize that the software employed in Match Poker guarantees a fair playing environment, providing each team an equal opportunity to succeed – a crucial distinction from traditional poker where fortune can play a substantial part. This focus on skill and the absence of financial wagers are paramount to the IFP’s assertion that Match Poker should be categorized as a mind sport rather than gambling.
Patrick Nally, the head of the IFP, conveyed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, remarking, “The union between Oceans and Alisports establishes one of the most influential sports marketing entities globally.
